Pete Henrikson, who was recently interviewed on the Weather Channel, gave professional advice on how to better care for the lawns as more people spend time outside in their yard enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. What should people be doing or looking for to tackle weed control?  

For all lawns across the United States, springtime is a great time to put down a pre-emergent herbicide. This will help the lawns reduce weed pressure into those hot summer months.

While in the South, and up along the Atlantic Coast, it's a great time to get those early spring weeds cleaned up with a post-emergent herbicide. Then start to feed the lawn as it enters the strong-growing season with a well-balanced nitrogen-rich fertilizer to get it greened up and looking great.

 

What should we be doing about the trees and shrubs?

The message is simple. Homeowners should start with an inventory of the trees and shrubs they have on their property and make sure to trim their plants at the right time of year. Many of the shrubs in your yard can be trimmed in the springtime. Some of them needed to be trimmed in the fall. Ensure you’re trimming them at the right time of the year so you won’t be trimming off the flowering buds, or any of the new shoots.

Also, it is a great time to fertilize the trees and shrubs to give them the nutrition they need to bloom beautifully in the springtime. It gives them the ability to grow the heavy branches and leaves and get them healthy, as the weather warms up, and the heavy rains come.
